My externship at the Village of Humber Heights was not just a pivotal moment; it was a transformative experience that laid the foundation for my journey toward becoming a compassionate and skilled Personal Support Worker (PSW). This hands-on experience bridged the gap between theory learned in the classroom and the heartfelt, real-world application of care. Each day, I found myself savoring the opportunity to translate my academic knowledge into meaningful interactions with residents, witnessing their smiles and hearing their stories, which filled my heart with warmth. It was the culmination of all my studies, and more importantly, it served as a launchpad for a future devoted to person-centered care. As I navigated through my placement, I discovered not only key lessons in care but also faced challenges that deepened my resilience and empathy. I remember one elderly resident who, despite her struggles, shared laughter and wisdom, leaving an indelible mark on my heart. From the very first moment I stepped into the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere of Humber Heights, I was enveloped in a sense of purpose and belonging that reaffirmed my commitment to this fulfilling profession. These cherished experiences shaped my understanding of compassionate care and ignited a passion within me that I will carry throughout my career.
Orientation and Introduction to the Team
My first day at the Village began with an orientation that felt both exciting and nerve-wracking. As I soaked in the details of the Village’s exceptional care philosophy and the essential safety rules, a sense of belonging started to bloom within me. Meeting the incredible team was a highlight, and I was genuinely touched by the dedication and warmth that radiated from everyone—from the nurses and personal support workers to the therapists and administrative staff.
I was paired with MT, a seasoned personal support worker who quickly became more than just a mentor; she was a role model. Her patience and depth of knowledge were inspiring, but what truly stood out was her heartfelt compassion for the residents. Every day, she brightened my spirits with a lovingly packed free lunch—a small gesture that spoke volumes about her character. MT’s kindness made me feel welcomed and valued, as if she was not just teaching me the ropes but also inviting me into a caring family.
Motivated by my new role, I dove in and committed myself to memorizing the names of every resident, etching them into my heart as if they were treasured jewels. Each name held a story, and I felt a growing responsibility to honor those stories. Next, I learned their seating arrangements in the dining room, discovered the delightful snacks that brought smiles to their faces, and understood their preferences—whether they sought the rich warmth of coffee or the soothing comfort of tea, black or swirled with the creamy embrace of milk, perhaps with a sprinkle of sugar to sweeten their day.
I also took the time to respect their dietary needs, noting who required pureed meals, thickened liquids, or could simply enjoy a regular consistency. This wasn’t just a job; it was truly a labor of love. With every detail I absorbed, I felt as though I was weaving an intricate tapestry of connections. Knowing these precious facts transformed the task into a joyful journey, enriching not only my experience but also deepening my commitment to the residents I had the honor to serve. Each face, each story, each unique preference became a part of me, further igniting my passion for this beautiful calling.
Hands-on Experience and Skill Development
During my externship, I immersed myself in the daily lives of the residents, forming genuine connections that transformed my understanding of care. This invaluable experience allowed me to apply the skills I had meticulously honed in my PSW program, enriching my ability to support and nurture those in need. With my mentor’s unwavering guidance and the warmth of my fellow staff members, I found myself gradually embracing a broader array of responsibilities, including:
Assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): This included a wide range of tasks. These tasks involved assisting residents with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and eating. I learned the importance of respecting residents’ dignity and independence while providing necessary support. I also learned how to adapt my approach to meet the unique needs and preferences of each individual. For example, one resident, Anne S., preferred to dress themselves. I offered gentle encouragement and assistance only when needed.
Mobility Assistance: Many residents required assistance with ambulation, transfers, and positioning. I gained skill in using various mobility aids. These include walkers, wheelchairs, and mechanical lifts. I prioritized resident safety and comfort. I learned the importance of proper body mechanics to prevent injuries to both the resident and myself.
Medication Reminders: I was not permitted to manage medication. Still, I played a vital role in reminding residents to take their prescribed medications. I also reported any concerns to the nursing staff. This reinforced the importance of precise observation and communication within the healthcare team.
Meal Assistance: I assisted residents during mealtimes, ensuring they were comfortable and had access to their preferred foods. I learned about different dietary restrictions and the importance of promoting adequate nutrition and hydration. I also learned how to create a pleasant and social dining environment.
Social Interaction and Emotional Support: Beyond the physical tasks, I recognized the crucial role of providing social interaction. It was also important to offer emotional support. I spent time talking with residents. I listened to their stories. I engaged them in activities like games, puzzles, and reminiscing. I learned the power of a listening ear and a compassionate presence in alleviating loneliness and promoting well-being. One resident shared fascinating stories about their life, and I felt privileged to hear their experiences. (To be continued)
