Challenges and Learning Opportunities
While my externship was incredibly rewarding, it also presented some challenges that tested my abilities and resilience. One of the most difficult aspects was dealing with residents experiencing cognitive decline or dementia. Every interaction required a deep level of empathy and awareness. I learned the importance of patience and understanding. I adapted my communication style to meet their needs. Each individual responded differently based on their unique circumstances. I also learned the crucial importance of validating their feelings, recognizing that even fleeting moments of clarity could be cherished. Creating a safe and supportive environment became a focus, allowing them to express themselves without fear or confusion. Another challenge was managing my time effectively. I needed to prioritize tasks. This was especially true during busy periods when demands were high and required immediate attention. With the guidance of my mentor, I learned valuable organizational skills. I also learned the importance of teamwork. These skills not only helped in balancing my responsibilities but also fostered a collaborative spirit among the staff. This ultimately benefited the residents. These experiences significantly shaped my perspective and prepared me for future challenges in the healthcare field.
Memorable Moments and Reflections
There were numerous unforgettable moments during my externship that I will cherish long after completing my studies. One particularly touching experience was when I assisted a resident named Zed (not her real name) with her afternoon routine. As I gently guided her through the tasks, she paused and looked into my eyes, saying thank you for my help. Her warm smile and heartfelt words of appreciation echoed in my mind: “You are so kind.” Those seemingly small moments of human connection ignited a deep passion for personal support work within me and reminded me of the significant impact we can have on others’ lives.
My externship at the Village of Humber Heights was far more than a learning opportunity; it was a transformative journey that equipped me with essential skills, knowledge, and an abundance of compassion needed to excel as a PSW. I am profoundly grateful for the chance to collaborate with such a caring and dedicated team. This experience has not only prepared me for a fulfilling career in personal support work but has also instilled in me a profound understanding of the emotional needs of residents. I learned how to nurture both their physical requirements and their spirits, offering them comfort, companionship, and the utmost respect. This externship has solidified my belief in the invaluable role of PSWs in the healthcare system, showcasing how our genuine care can truly change lives for the better.
